IAEA tells Israel to allow nuclear inspections

The 150 members of the UN nuclear watch dog have adopted an Arab motion calling on Israel to allow IAEA inspections at all nuclear sites.

The motion also urges Israel to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). It is the first time in 18 years that such a resolution has been adopted with respect to Israel. Western countries, which had been blocking such a resolution, were outvoted by the growing number of developing nations. Russia and China backed the resolution also. Israel is one of the few countries which has refused to sign the NPT. It is virtually certain that Israel is the only nuclear power in the Middle East.
